Review: Along the Watchtower

Along the Watchtower by David Litwack is a dual story that tells the tales of both Freddie and Frederick one person with a dream and a reality he must figure out. Freddie's quest begins when he wakes up at the VA hospital with a severe leg injury from being in the war. An avid World of Warcraft player, he also has a well-developed imagination that keeps takes him back to a kingdom in his dreams. When he sleeps, he is Frederick, dauphin destined to be king. However, in order to be king and to save his kingdom, he must complete three trials that teach him a lot about his life and his future. These also help to shape Freddie's story.

I love how these stories play off of one another to give the reader a complete picture of Freddie—his hopes, dreams and fears. The intertwined stories also help Freddie to figure out exactly what he has to do in his waking hours in order to recognize his past, take on tasks in the present so that he can shape his own future the way he wants it to look. With the help of Becky, his physical therapist, he is able to break the spell so that he can be the king of his own destiny.
