Review: On a Night Like This by Barbara Freethy

When all you want to do is surprise your father for his birthday and it turns into a huge disaster, who do you turn to? For Sara, comfort can be found in the many arms that make up the Callaway family, her childhood neighbors. The family includes Sara’s best friend Emma as well as her first and biggest crush, Aiden. When she and Aiden meet again, sparks will fly—and not just because the Callaway family has a tradition of being firefighters. 

This book is a great start to a romance series. If you have read the works of authors like Bella Andre, then you will love this series. It’s exactly the same, yet totally different. It revolves around the love lives of the children in the Callaway family and takes place in San Francisco, but that’s where the similarities end. On a Night Like This is a perfect start to the series, though the romance part of the book felt rushed. Much of the book is actually focused on the secret’s in Sara’s family and the tragedy of Aiden losing his best friend Kyle while firejumping. Once they help each other with their feelings and actions to figure out their individual issues, they need to decide whether they should be with each other. 

The only other issue with this first novel is that it introduces a storyline with Emma Callaway that does not resolve in the first book. If you know you will keep reading the series, it isn’t much of an issue, though it may bother some readers. Overall, this is a series that I want to continue reading. On to book 2!
